The Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Federal Road Maintenance Agency, Femi Bamisile, said on Friday that the present financial incapability of the Federal Government to maintain federal roads made the review of the recent directive to state government not to repair the roads imperative.
Bamisile, who lamented the deplorable state of roads across the nation, said there was a need to declare a state of emergency on the road sector, saying the National Assembly would revisit the issue of repair of federal roads.
The FERMA chairman spoke in Ado Ekiti during a visit of the committee to the Ureje Bridge on Ado–Ikare Road connecting Ado Ekiti to Afe Babalola University and Federal Polytechnic, Ado Ekiti, which collapsed on Monday night following flooding.
He said, “The House of Representatives will debate the order and address it properly because we can’t subject our people to hardship of bad roads.
“The deplorable state of our roads is disturbing and that order coming at a time like this when the Federal Government has no capacity to give necessary attentions to these roads across the federation makes it imperative for the House of Representatives to address the situation.
“Governor Kayode Fayemi even told me that he has a letter from the Federal Ministry of Works on his table telling him not to rehabilitate federal roads that it should be left for the Federal Government to undertake. I am assuring Nigerians that the National Assembly will look into the matter.”
