The Federal Government has commenced the prosecution of more than 400 suspected terrorists in a fresh round of mass trials at the Federal High Court complex in Abuja.
Reports revealed that the prosecution will be led by the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi. While the Director of Public Prosecution of the Federation, Rotimi Oyedepo, and a team of government lawyers will support him.
The defendants who were charged with various criminal offences including terrorism, aiding and abetting insurgent activities, and terrorism financing.
Apparently, the trials were conducted before different courts within the Federal High Court complex in Abuja. In order to facilitate the proceedings, the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, John Tsoho, constituted a special panel of judges to hear the cases.
Recall that this new trial follows a similar mass trial conducted in April 2026. During that trial, the Office of the Attorney General secured 386 convictions out of 508 defendants. Eight defendants were discharged, while two were acquitted. Several of those convicted received prison sentences of up to 20 years.
However, the Federal Government was represented by the Office of the Attorney General, while legal representation for indigent defendants is being provided by the Legal Aid Council of Nigeria.
The ongoing trials reflect part of the government’s efforts to hasten prosecution of long-standing terrorism-related cases.
Unlike previous proceedings held at the military facility in Kainji, Niger State, the current trials are taking place in Abuja. A move targeted at improving access to the judicial process and accelerating the dispensation of justice.
