The outcome of the Ekiti State governorship election has sparked waves of reactions online following the circulation of videos on social media allegedly showing incidents of vote buying and voter inducement during the poll.
The videos, which surfaced before and during the election, triggered widespread reactions from Nigerians, opposition figures and civil society groups, with many questioning the credibility of the electoral process. Some clips reportedly showed individuals distributing cash and other items to voters. Also, in a viral video a Nigerian Lady excitedly flaunts ₦15,000 allegedly received from APC for vote-buying during Ekiti election.
While separate footage allegedly captured campaign supporters sharing food items with residents ahead of the election.
The controversy intensified as the sitting Governor Biodun Oyebanji of All Progressives Congress (APC) political party secured victory in the election with 319,224 votes. The winning had since prompted critics to link the alleged inducement activities to the outcome of the poll. Opposition voices and political commentators accused major political actors of exploiting economic hardship to influence voters, although the allegations have not been independently verified by electoral authorities.
However, several observers also raised concerns online, arguing that vote buying has become a growing threat to Nigeria’s democratic process. Reports from polling units across the state indicated isolated complaints of voter inducement, despite the election being largely peaceful.
Although, as of the time of filing this report, the Independent National Electoral Commission has not announced any official findings regarding the viral videos. Election stakeholders have called for a thorough investigation into the allegations to protect public confidence in future elections.
The incident has reignited the national debate on electoral integrity, with many Nigerians urging authorities to strengthen measures against vote buying and other forms of voter manipulation.
