Nigerians react as landlord jacks tenant’s rent from ₦250K to ₦600K with few days notice

Nigerians have expressed shock and anger at a landlord’s recent decision to hike tenant’s rent with a few days notice.

The letter, circulating online, was written by a landlord named Eworidi Ebogho to his tenant Zack Osunye on March 27th, 2026.

The landlord, Ebogho, disclosed that the yearly rent for the one-bedroom apartment occupied by Osunye has increased from Two Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira (₦250,000) to Six Hundred Thousand (₦600,000).

He added that the rent will take effect from 7th April, 2026. However, he didn’t explain the reason for the rent increment.

Meanwhile, social media users have expressed anger at the huge and sudden rent increment instituted by the landlord. They argued that this behaviour is not uncommon, especially among landlords in Lagos state who intentionally exploit tenants.

Amid this, some users have urged the tenant to challenge the increment in court, arguing that the decision may be reversed.
