The Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande has clarified that no final decision has been made on replacing the current National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) uniform.
His clarification followed earlier reports suggesting that Adire fabric had been approved as its replacement.
According to a statement issued on his social media platform the Minister stated that his earlier comments during an appearance on Channels Television had been misunderstood. He explained that Adire and Ankara were mentioned only as examples of proposals being considered during ongoing consultations and not as approved replacements for the existing khaki uniform.
Olawande stressed that the government is currently evaluating several options based on key criteria, including professional appearance, national identity, durability, functionality, cost-effectiveness, and the ability to promote national pride. While emphasizing on the fact that no fabric or design has been selected.
He added that any eventual decision would be reached through extensive stakeholder consultations and would be guided by what best serves the interests of the NYSC and the nation.
The minister further urged Nigerians not to allow the debate over the proposed uniform to overshadow the broader objectives of the ongoing NYSC reforms. Noting that the reforms are aimed at making the scheme more relevant by improving youth employability, promoting entrepreneurship, strengthening national integration, enhancing service delivery, and easing the transition from education to productive careers.
However, he appreciated Nigerians for their feedback then assured the public that every proposal under consideration would be carefully evaluated in the country’s best interest.
