Lagos State Arrests 56-Year-Old Man for Illegal Waste Dumping in Ikorodu

The Lagos State Government has arrested a 56-year-old man, Mr. John Ehidreme, for allegedly dumping waste refuse into a drainage channel at No. 18 Oluoga, Ikorodu.

According to the statement issued by the Commissioner for environmental and water resources, Tokunbo Wahab, the suspect was apprehended earlier today during an enforcement operation.

In his statement he reiterated that indiscriminate waste disposal violates Lagos environmental laws. While stating that the practice obstructs the free flow of stormwater, increases the risk of flooding during heavy rainfall, pollutes the environment, and creates breeding grounds for disease-carrying pests, thereby posing serious public health and environmental hazards.

However, the arrest comes amid intensified efforts by the Lagos State Government to promote environmental sustainability and ensure compliance with sanitation laws. A persistent challenge that continues to contribute to flooding and environmental degradation in many parts of Lagos.

Officials have repeatedly warned that individuals caught engaging in illegal waste disposal will face the full weight of the law.

The government further urged residents to dispose of their waste responsibly through approved waste management operators and designated disposal facilities. The government also called on members of the public to support its clean environment campaign by reporting environmental violations and adopting proper waste disposal practices to help keep drainage systems free of obstruction.
