27-year-old Nigerian mother dies by suicide in UK after mental health struggles

A coroner’s inquest in the United Kingdom has concluded that a 27-year-old Nigerian mother, Beatrice Solomon, died by suicide following a prolonged struggle with her mental health.

Beatrice was found unresponsive at her home on Norris Road, Stanfield, Stoke-on-Trent, on March 4, 2026.

According to evidence presented at the inquest, her husband, Damian Michael Butler, had left for work at about 4:30 p.m. before returning approximately two hours later, when he discovered her unresponsive. Emergency responders arrived shortly afterwards, but she was pronounced dead at the scene at 6:21 p.m.

Police investigations found no evidence of third-party involvement.

During the hearing, Butler testified that his wife had experienced mental health challenges over the previous 12 months, which he linked to ongoing issues involving Stoke-on-Trent City Council. He also revealed that he later learned Beatrice had made two previous attempts to end her life.

A post-mortem examination conducted by pathologist Dr. Jones determined that she died from oxygen deprivation.

Delivering her conclusion, Coroner Li Hammond-Naylor ruled that Beatrice died by suicide.

“It is clear to me that Beatrice had researched and planned how to take her own life. I can only extend my sincere condolences to Beatrice’s family and friends,” the coroner said.

Beatrice, who worked as a carer, relocated from Nigeria to Stoke-on-Trent in November 2023. She is survived by her young son and siblings.

Netizen reaction

Meanwhile, a Facebook user, Gloria Okezie-Okafor, in a reaction to the incident, said no one is ever truly powerless regardless of the situation they may be facing.

According to her, people should give themselves time, refuse to be overwhelmed by life’s challenges, and trust the process even when the journey is difficult.

She noted that every challenge comes with a blessing, urging people to hold on to hope, trust the unseen, and continue speaking positively over their circumstances.

Gloria also appealed to anyone struggling emotionally not to take their own life.

Addressing married couples, she stressed that being married alone is not enough, urging spouses to intentionally check on their partners’ emotional well-being and ensure they do not feel lonely despite living together.

She further expressed hope that ongoing investigations would establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident, including whether there was any third-party involvement.
