Troops of Operation HADIN KAI have repelled an attack by Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists on a Forward Operating Base in Gajiram, Nganzai Local Government Area of Borno State, killing several terrorists and recovering weapons, ammunition and communication equipment.
Terrorists Attack FOB Gajiram
The attack occurred at about 12:20 a.m. on Monday, August 10, 2026, when a large number of ISWAP terrorists launched an assault on the military position in an attempt to overrun the troops.
According to a statement issued by the Acting Military Information Officer, Headquarters Joint Task Force (North East), Operation HADIN KAI, Capt. Mohammed Goni, the troops responded with sustained fire and forced the attackers to withdraw after they suffered heavy casualties.
“The gallant troops responded with determined and effective fire, forcing the attackers to withdraw after sustaining heavy casualties,” the statement said.
The statement said several of the terrorists were neutralised during the encounter, while troops recovered weapons, ammunition and communication gadgets from the operational area.
It added that surveillance footage reviewed after the engagement showed several casualties being evacuated by the retreating terrorists.
“Post-engagement review of the surveillance footage further confirmed several casualties being evacuated by the retreating terrorists,” the statement said.
According to the military, the recovered items and surveillance footage are undergoing further operational assessment.
Troops Sustain Injuries
The military also disclosed that some troops sustained injuries during the attack after part of the defence was temporarily breached.
The breach reportedly resulted in damage to some combat equipment and vehicles following rocket-propelled grenade fire from the terrorists.

The injured personnel were subsequently evacuated by air and are currently receiving medical attention.
The statement said the injured soldiers are “currently stable and receiving medical attention.”
Security Forces Maintain Vigilance
Following the attack, troops remained deployed in and around the Forward Operating Base and adjoining areas to dominate the general area, monitor developments and prevent the terrorists from launching another attack.
Residents of Gajiram and neighbouring communities were urged to remain calm and continue with their lawful activities.
The military also called on members of the public to promptly report suspicious movements or activities to security agencies to support ongoing intelligence-gathering efforts.
Military Vows to Sustain Pressure on ISWAP
Troops have continued to maintain high vigilance around Gajiram, while exploitation of the operational area and further assessment of the terrorists’ casualties and activities remain ongoing.
The Theatre Command, Operation HADIN KAI, reassured residents of its continued commitment to combating terrorism in the North-East.
