Senator Peter Onyekachi Nwebonyi, the Deputy Chief Whip of the Senate and representative of Ebonyi North Senatorial District, has sparked reactions online after a video showed him campaigning across a river in an Izzi community in Ebonyi State.
In the video circulating on social media on Friday, August 28, 2026, Nwebonyi is seen standing on one side of a river while residents gather on the opposite bank. The absence of a bridge connecting the two sides reportedly prevented the senator from physically crossing over to meet the residents.
Instead, he addressed the people from across the river as he continued his campaign activities in the community.
The unusual scene has attracted widespread attention, with social media users questioning the state of infrastructure in rural communities within the senatorial district.
Notably, the senator had reportedly travelled to the community to solicit votes but was unable to cross the river because there was no bridge linking the area to the community.
The development has triggered debate over rural infrastructure and accessibility in parts of Ebonyi State, particularly communities where rivers and poor road networks can make movement difficult.
Some commentators described the incident as ironic, noting that Nwebonyi serves as senator representing the area and has championed several infrastructure projects across Ebonyi North.
However, the video has shifted attention to the infrastructure gaps that remain in some rural communities, with critics arguing that the scene illustrates the difficulties residents face accessing basic amenities and transportation links. Thus, calling for improved rural infrastructure and better access to isolated communities in Ebonyi State.
Although,the senator and his media team had not, as of the latest reports, publicly addressed the specific circumstances surrounding the campaign stop or explained whether plans are in place to construct a bridge at the location.
