The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has dismantled a clandestine methamphetamine laboratory allegedly operated by a Nigerian-Mexican drug cartel in Enugu State, arresting two suspected kingpins linked to the operation.
The laboratory was uncovered in Eziama community, Obeagu, Awgu Local Government Area of the state, following months of intelligence gathering and surveillance by the agency.
The two suspects, identified as 45-year-old Chukwu Obumneme Christopher, alias Brown, and 60-year-old Chukwu Georginus Monday, alias George, were subsequently arraigned before the Federal High Court in Enugu.
According to the NDLEA, the suspects allegedly operated the laboratory in partnership with Rodriguez Villanueva, whom the agency identified as a member of a Mexican drug cartel based in Mexico City.
How NDLEA Tracked The Syndicate
The agency said investigations by its Special Operations Unit uncovered what it described as a sophisticated transnational drug operation.
NDLEA surveillance conducted between December 1 and 4, 2025, reportedly tracked Christopher’s movements across Lagos, Enugu and Anambra states before operatives traced him to a compound in Obeagu.
A search of the premises allegedly revealed a clandestine laboratory equipped with improvised reactors and distillation apparatus, which the agency said was capable of producing methamphetamine in commercial quantities.
NDLEA said the facility was similar to other clandestine laboratories recently dismantled in Ogun, Oyo and Ebonyi states.
Huge Chemical Haul Recovered
The agency said officers recovered large quantities of precursor chemicals from the laboratory, including 690 litres of methylamine, 1,000 litres of isopropyl alcohol, 300 litres of hydrochloric acid, 290 litres each of toluene and acetone, and 400 litres of liquid sodium hydroxide.
Also recovered, according to the NDLEA, were 125kg of N-phenylacetamide, 414kg of lead acetate and 769.6kg of tartaric acid, among other controlled substances.
The agency said the quantity and combination of chemicals recovered were consistent with a P2P-based methamphetamine manufacturing operation.
A related search of Monday’s family residence allegedly produced eight large fuel tanks, four commercial gas burners, four dehydrators and 11kg of ephedrine.
Three Others Still At Large
Christopher and Monday were arraigned on a five-count charge bordering on conspiracy, organising, managing and financing a drug trafficking organisation, as well as unlawful possession of precursor chemicals allegedly used in methamphetamine production.
They pleaded to the charges.
Justice Mabel Taiye Segun-Bello subsequently fixed October 21, 2026, for trial after the NDLEA applied for an accelerated hearing.
Three other individuals named in the charge — Uchenna, alias Uche; Celestine Ikemefuna Iwuchukwu; and Rodriguez Villanueva — remain at large, according to the agency.
Marwa Vows To Track Fleeing Suspects
NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd.), commended the officers involved in the operation and vowed that the agency would continue efforts to apprehend everyone linked to the alleged cartel.
Marwa said the Enugu operation demonstrated the agency’s determination to prevent Nigeria from becoming a base for transnational drug networks.
He also directed NDLEA personnel to sustain intelligence-led enforcement operations against illicit drug production and trafficking across the country.
