Olori Atuwatse III, wife of the Olu of Warri, His Majesty Ògíamẹ̀ Atuwatse III, has declared that she would not accept her husband taking another wife, insisting that she is more than enough for the monarch.

The Queen of Warri Kingdom made the remarks during an exclusive interview with BBC News Pidgin, where she spoke about her marriage, her husband’s busy royal schedule, fashion and her views on polygamy.

Addressing the possibility of the Olu of Warri changing his mind about polygamy, Olori Atuwatse said she was confident he would not do so.

“First of all, His Majesty no go fit change im mind about polygamy make we just settle dat one for dia. Me alone, one me, I be like three women so I dey alright for am,” she said.

‘Sometimes, I Just Want Him To Myself’

The Queen also spoke candidly about one of the challenges of being married to a monarch whose duties require him to constantly engage with people and communities.

According to her, sharing her husband’s time with his numerous royal responsibilities can sometimes be difficult.

She said she sometimes wishes to have the king all to herself but acknowledged that they were learning how to manage the demands of his position.

“Sometimes I just want am for myself, you understand?” she said.

Olori Atuwatse also expressed pride in her husband, saying she particularly enjoyed seeing people recognise his personality, abilities and sense of style.

She said she was “extremely proud” of him as a person and was happy whenever society celebrated his achievements.

‘I Be My Husband’s Stylist’

The Olori also revealed a personal secret behind the Olu of Warri’s widely noticed fashion sense.

Asked about the couple’s distinctive style, she jokingly disclosed that she was the person behind her husband’s wardrobe.

“You want make I tell you secret? I be my husband stylist,” she said.

She also explained her decision to frequently wear a turban and cover her hair during royal engagements.

According to her, the turban is part of how she views and represents her position as queen.

“My turban na my crown,” she said, explaining that covering her hair while in “Queen mode” is her way of showing respect for the office she occupies.

Queen Rules Out Political Ambition

The Olori also said she had no plans to venture into politics despite encouraging Nigerian women to participate more actively in political leadership.

“No! I no get plan to enter politics o. I no get plan to enter politics. I dey okay where I dey for now,” she said.

She, however, urged women who are interested in politics to believe in their ability to contest elections and lead.

According to her, women should not limit themselves to political mobilisation and campaign activities but should also seek elective positions.

Olori Speaks On Niger Delta Education

Beyond her marriage and royal responsibilities, Olori Atuwatse spoke about the state of education in riverine communities in the Niger Delta.

She recalled visiting schools where pupils were learning in difficult conditions, including classrooms with damaged roofs and inadequate facilities.

She said she and the Olu of Warri had pledged to renovate at least two schools every year in their communities.

The Queen described education as crucial to the future of the Warri Kingdom and the wider Niger Delta, saying efforts were needed to improve learning conditions for children in the region.
