Federal Government Launches National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System

Nigeria has launched a National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System to improve location accuracy and strengthen access to essential services across the country.

The Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani, announced the initiative via his X handle, saying it was developed by the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) to provide more precise digital addressing for homes, businesses and communities.

According to him, the system is designed to support deliveries, emergency response, government outreach and business expansion by making it easier to identify and locate specific addresses.

Tijani said the initiative forms part of efforts to build foundational digital infrastructure capable of connecting communities to economic opportunities and supporting President Bola Tinubu’s $1 trillion economy target.

The minister, also stressed that the digital postcode system could particularly benefit small businesses by giving them more precise addresses for deliveries and customer access. It could also improve the distribution of government assistance and other services to people who may be difficult to locate through conventional addressing methods.

NIPOST has made a public tool available through postcode.gov.ng, allowing Nigerians to find, access and share their digital postcode.

Tijani further highlighted the system’s potential benefits, while sharing testimonials from users and encouraging the public to provide feedback as authorities work to refine the system and promote wider adoption nationwide.
