NAFDAC Seizes ₦200m Counterfeit Alcohol Packaging Materials In Aba

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has seized counterfeit packaging materials worth over ₦200 million from five shops at Old Court Road Market in Aba, Abia State.

The agency said its Investigation and Enforcement operatives raided the shops on Wednesday, October 14, following credible intelligence that they were allegedly involved in producing and supplying counterfeit packaging materials for alcoholic beverages and other consumer products.

Popular Beverage Brands Targeted

According to NAFDAC, the operation uncovered counterfeit labels, corks, packs and outer packaging materials bearing the names of several popular brands.

The affected brands include Jameson, Glenfiddich, Four Cousins, Lord’s Dry Gin, Imperial Blue, Goya Oil, Chelsea, Squadron and Seaman’s Aromatic Schnapps.

The agency estimated the value of the seized materials at more than ₦200 million.

Traders Resist Enforcement Operatives

NAFDAC said its operatives encountered threats and resistance from some traders during the raid, making it difficult to evacuate the seized materials.

The owners of the five shops were reportedly absent when the enforcement team arrived. The agency said the premises were secured to prevent interference with the materials left inside.

NAFDAC subsequently invited the market union chairman, who pledged to help secure the affected premises and assist in identifying and presenting the shop owners to the agency.

Concerns Over Counterfeit Products

Counterfeit packaging can be used to make fake, adulterated or unregulated products appear genuine, potentially exposing consumers to health risks.

The seizure comes amid increased enforcement activities by NAFDAC against suspected counterfeit alcoholic beverages and other unsafe consumer products.

The agency has yet to announce any arrests in connection with the Aba operation or disclose the identities of the shop owners.
