American singer Chris Brown has received an eight month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, over an attack on music producer Abraham Diaw at a London nightclub in 2023.
Southwark Crown Court handed down the sentence, allowing the singer to avoid immediate imprisonment unless he breaches the suspension conditions or commits another offence during the specified period.
The incident occurred in the early hours of February 19, 2023, at Tape nightclub in Mayfair, London, where Brown allegedly struck Diaw twice on the head with a Don Julio 1942 tequila bottle.
Brown pleaded guilty to affray, an offence involving the use or threat of unlawful violence that causes others to fear for their safety. Following his guilty plea, prosecutors dropped more serious charges, including assault, attempted grievous bodily harm and possession of an offensive weapon.
The court also sentenced Brown’s co-defendant, vocal coach Omololu Akinlolu, popularly known as Hoody Baby, to four months in prison, suspended for 12 months, after he pleaded guilty to affray.
During the proceedings, Judge Tony Baumgartner reportedly stressed that Brown’s celebrity status and commercial success would not earn him preferential treatment under the law.
The suspended sentence means Brown will not serve the eight-month prison term immediately. However, a breach of the court’s conditions or another offence during the suspension period could lead to further legal consequences, including the activation of the prison sentence.
The case has, however drawn attention to the legal consequences of violent incidents involving high-profile entertainers and the courts’ handling of criminal offences regardless of a defendant’s public standing.
Brown, known for hits such as Run It! and With You, has maintained a successful music career spanning nearly two decades.
The ruling concludes the sentencing stage of the case, although the suspended sentence leaves the singer subject to the court’s conditions for the next 12 months.
