Nigerian Army debunks Sojaboy’s allegations, says Soldiers don’t buy uniforms, boots

The Nigerian Army has debunked recent allegations by a former soldier, Rotimi Olamilekan (Sojaboy) alleging that soldiers use their money to purchase uniforms and boots among other things.

The Nigerian Army disclosed that the claim that soldiers are required to purchase uniforms and protective equipment is entirely false.

The army stated that the provision of these items is an institutional responsibility executed through established logistics systems. They added that dedicated ordnance units oversee the procurement, and issuance of these items to ensure troops are adequately equipped.

Meanwhile, they said despite these provisions, some personnel may choose to supplement issued kits based on personal preference and comfort. However, these actions are voluntary and do not indicate any systemic failure.

“For the avoidance of doubt, no soldier is deployed to an operational theatre without the necessary protective equipment. Claims that such gear is only issued during ceremonial visits are deliberate falsehoods intended to mislead the public,” the Army stated.

The Nigerian Army’s statement comes in response to recent allegations by former soldier Rotimi Olalekan (Sojaboy) regarding soldiers’ welfare. According to Sojaboy, soldiers are paid a little over 100,000 naira. However, they use part of this money to buy uniforms, boots, and other important items.

He added that he was also dismissed for speaking the truth and expressing his opinions on political leadership. Recall that a few years ago, Sojabou trended on social media after daring politicians to send their children to the conflict zones.

In response, the Army argued that Sojaboy was not dismissed for speaking the truth. They stressed that he was instead dismissed for persistent and grave acts of indiscipline and social media policy violations.

Per the statement;

“Unauthorised media appearances, commercialisation of military identity, partisan content creation and misuse of military uniform constitute clear breaches of established regulations. His dismissal followed due process in line with military laws.”

Additionally, the army contended that it operates on a structured salary system where earnings are determined by rank. They furthered that soldiers are also entitled to uniform allowances and other allowances in addition to their consolidated monthly salaries.
