The US Government has withdrawn its non-emergency embassy employees from Nigeria while asking its citizens to reconsider visiting the country over rising insecurity.
According to the US Department of State Consular Affairs, the employees and their families have been authorized to leave the US Embassy in Abuja.
The department explained that on April 8, that the withdrawal is due to the deteriorating security situation in the country.
Additionally, the US Government has raised the overall Travel Advisory for Nigeria to Level 3. That is, all US citizens are now being urged to reconsider traveling to the country.
The authorities explained that some states in Nigeria are already at Level 4. This means citizens are strictly advised not to travel to these states over terrorism, crime, unrest, and kidnapping concerns.
Some of the Level 4 – Do Not Travel states include Borno, Jigawa, Kogi, Kwara, Niger, Plateau, Taraba, Yobe, and Adamawa. The government also identified Bauchi, Gombe, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Sokoto, and Zamfara states.
In the southern part of Nigeria, Abia, Anambra, Bayelsa, Delta, Enugu, Imo, and Rivers states, also made the list.
The US Government’s advisory comes amid rising insecurity in Nigeria which is now extending beyond the North and closer to the South. The incidents have already raised massive backlash among Nigerians who are now blaming the government for the continued attacks.
