The Organizers of the Wireless Festival have canceled the event following multiple controversies and the United Kingdom Government’s ban on Kanye West, now known as “Ye”.
Wireless announced in an April 7 post on X that it canceled the event following the decision of the UK Home Office banned YE from entering the country. Organizers noted that all ticket holders will receive an automatic full refund following the cancellation.
The event’s cancellation follows several controversies that have trailed YE’s announcement as the headline performer for the 3-day music festival.
Over the past few days, sponsors of the event like Diageo, Pepsi, and others have withdrawn their support for the event over YE’s controversial anti-semitic stance.
Reports alleged that multiple stakeholders were consulted in advance of booking YE and no concerns were highlighted at the time.
Amid this, YE has acknowledged that his words alone are not enough. Hence, he has disclosed intentions to begin a conversation with the Jewish community in the UK if allowed.
Nevertheless, the entire incident has drawn mixed reactions from stakeholders across the United Kingdom.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer argued that YE should never have been invited to headline Wireless.
He furthered that;
This government stands firmly with the Jewish community, and we will not stop in our fight to confront and defeat the poison of antisemitism. We will always take the action necessary to protect the public and uphold our values.
Conversely, Restore Britain Party Leader Rupert Lowe opined that the ban is excessive. He stressed that the decision should have been left to Britons to decide whether or not to attend the festival.
“He’s a nutcase. But it should be up to those people who purchased a ticket if they attend his events. Not Starmer. Banning him is too far,” Lowe added.
