Wedding Cancelled After Bride Pushes ₦12m Budget to ₦18m

A Nigerian couple’s wedding has reportedly been called off after a disagreement over the ceremony’s budget escalated into a major conflict between the bride and her fiancé.

According to an account shared on X, the couple initially agreed on a wedding budget of ₦12 million. However, the bride later pushed for the budget to be increased to ₦18 million, expecting her fiancé, who earns more than she does, to provide the additional ₦6 million.

The groom reportedly refused to take on the extra financial burden, leading to disagreement between the couple. The situation worsened after the bride allegedly reacted negatively to his refusal. As tensions continued, the groom reportedly put the wedding preparations on hold before eventually deciding to cancel the marriage entirely.

However,  the X user who had previously shared an account of the couple’s situation, explained that the major issue was not necessarily the additional ₦6 million but how the couple handled the disagreement. According to her, the argument exposed deeper concerns about financial expectations, communication and the couple’s ability to resolve conflicts before marriage.

She further cautioned couples against pressuring their partners into making financial decisions they are uncomfortable with, stressing that disagreements over money can reveal important differences in values and expectations.

The incident has since sparked discussions about financial compatibility, communication and the importance of resolving major disagreements before saying “I do.”
