Alex Iwobi was voted Player of the Match as the Super Eagles survived an early scare to defeat Madagascar 2–1 in their opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying fixture in Uyo.

Nigeria fell behind in the 16th minute after Ehsan Kari headed Madagascar in front, leaving the hosts chasing the game at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium.

Iwobi Sparks Nigeria Comeback

With Nigeria struggling to break down the visitors, Iwobi provided the moment of quality needed to bring the Super Eagles level.

The Fulham midfielder quickly turned defence into attack before playing George Ilenikhena through in first-half stoppage time. The debutant kept his composure to finish and make it 1–1 before the break.

Iwobi also had a goal ruled out earlier in the match after Akor Adams was adjudged to have impeded the Madagascar goalkeeper.

Usor Completes Comeback

Nigeria continued to push after the interval and eventually completed the turnaround in the 65th minute.

Another debutant, Moses Usor, produced a fine individual effort to put the Super Eagles 2–1 ahead after receiving a pass from Semi Ajayi.

Madagascar continued to threaten, but Nigeria held on to secure three points from their opening Group L fixture.

Super Eagles Face Guinea-Bissau Next

The victory gives Eric Chelle’s side a winning start to their AFCON qualifying campaign.

Nigeria will next face Guinea-Bissau on Tuesday, September 29, in their second Group L fixture.

For Iwobi, the performance capped a night in which his creativity proved decisive as Nigeria recovered from a difficult start to claim victory.
