The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Lagos Zonal Directorate, has announced the arrest of a fake lawyer for allegedly operating with a forged Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) seal.
The suspect, identified as John Anoruo, 55, was arrested by EFCC operatives on Monday, April 20, 2026, following the submission of a petition and a subsequent letter of withdrawal on behalf of his client. Both documents reportedly bore a forged NBA seal.
Anoruo, who is said to run a legal and educational consultancy in the Ikorodu area of Lagos, was apprehended after discrepancies were discovered during routine checks.
During interrogation, the suspect reportedly admitted to the offence, stating that he obtained a law degree in 2018 from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Enugu State. Although it is through evening classes, he did not attend the Nigerian Law School, and therefore was not qualified to practice law or possess an official NBA seal.
According to the EFCC:
“Investigations revealed that both the petition and the subsequent letter of withdrawal dated March 5, 2026, bore a forged seal of the Nigerian Bar Association, which the suspect confessed to have obtained from an undisclosed business centre in Lagos.”
The Economic and Financial Commission Crimes added that the suspect will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
“The suspect will be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded,” the agency stated.
