The Senate of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education (IAUE), Port Harcourt, Rivers State, has expelled a final-year student, Chiamaka Nora Onyewuenyi, over a viral social media interview in which she allegedly claimed that her project supervisor wrote her final-year research project for ₦150,000.
Onyewuenyi, who studied English and Literary Studies, reportedly made the claims during an interview with a content creator. The video subsequently circulated widely on social media, drawing attention to her allegations about the handling of her final-year project.
In the interview, the student reportedly identified her project topic as “Citizenship” and alleged that her supervisor, a lecturer at the university, was writing the project for her after charging ₦150,000.
However, the university disputed her account, insisting that its Department of English and Literary Studies had no project topic titled “Citizenship.”
The institution’s Public Relations Officer, Dr Ngozi Okiridu, said the Senate considered the matter and approved the student’s expulsion over what the university described as “damaging content creation.”
In its statement, the university identified the student as Onyewuenyi Chiamaka Nora, with matriculation number U/2022/19900, and said the decision was intended to discourage other students from engaging in similar conduct.
According to reports, the university also said Onyewuenyi admitted that her claims were untrue and that she made them solely to create social media content. The institution attempted to persuade her to retract the statements but said she refused to withdraw them.
Subsequently, the Senate approved her expulsion, citing the need to deter other students from publishing content that could damage the university’s reputation.
However, the development has drawn attention to the responsibilities of students when making public allegations against lecturers and institutions, particularly on social media.
