Benin Chief Claims Land Dispute Led to Deaths of Major, Son, Seven Others

A fresh controversy has emerged over a disputed parcel of land after Chief Omo-Osagie Utetenegiabi, identified as the Obadolagbonyi of Benin, alleged that a disagreement over the property was followed by the deaths of several people, including a military officer identified as a Major, his son and a contractor.

Chief Utetenegiabi made the claims in a statement that has since circulated on social media, recounting how he allegedly lost control of a parcel of land he had purchased years earlier but could not develop due to financial constraints. The account has also been shared by several social media pages and users.

According to the Chief, he bought the property but was unable to commence development immediately. He said that after some years, he was informed that the same land had allegedly been sold to a military officer whom he referred to only as a “Major.”

He said he subsequently went to the property to address the matter, but the confrontation allegedly turned violent.

Recounting the incident, Chief Utetenegiabi said he was assaulted during the encounter and sustained injuries that left him unconscious.

He claimed that he spent nine days in a coma before eventually recovering and being discharged from hospital.

According to his account, he later returned to the disputed property after his discharge and carried out an action he described as having “thrown something there.”

He subsequently linked the development at the property to a number of deaths.

“The Major, his son, and the contractor died. About nine people died,” the Chief was quoted as saying.

The allegation has generated considerable discussion online, particularly because of the Chief’s claim that the deaths were connected to the unresolved dispute over the property.

However, the circumstances surrounding the alleged deaths remain unclear. The identity of the military officer, the contractor and the other people reportedly involved has not been independently established from available information.

There is also no independent confirmation from security agencies or other relevant authorities that the reported deaths occurred as described, or that they were connected to the disputed property.

Similarly, there is no verified evidence establishing a causal link between the action the Chief said he carried out at the property and the subsequent deaths. The connection remains an allegation contained in his account.

The Chief’s claims have nevertheless renewed discussions around the dangers of unresolved land disputes, particularly where competing claims of ownership, physical confrontations and alleged acts of retaliation become involved.

Land disputes are often complicated by issues surrounding ownership documents, multiple sales of the same property, traditional claims, family interests and alleged fraudulent transactions. Such disputes can escalate when parties resort to confrontation instead of established legal and administrative channels.

In this case, the Chief’s account raises questions about how the property was allegedly sold to another individual despite his claim that he had previously purchased it.

It also raises questions about the circumstances of the alleged assault that reportedly left him in a coma and the identities and causes of death of those he claimed subsequently died.

As of the time of this report, no official statement from the police, military or other relevant security authorities has been identified confirming the allegations.

The claims should therefore be treated as allegations pending independent verification.

The controversy comes amid continuing concerns over land-related disputes in different parts of Nigeria, where disagreements over ownership and development have sometimes resulted in prolonged legal battles and, in some cases, violent confrontations.

For now, Chief Omo-Osagie’s account has placed the alleged land dispute and its reported aftermath in the public spotlight, but key details, including the location of the property, the identities of those allegedly involved and the circumstances surrounding the reported deaths, remain to be independently established.
