CAF Appoints Nigerian Samson Adamu as General Secretary

Nigerian football administrator Samson Adamu has been appointed General Secretary of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), becoming the first Nigerian to occupy the position.

CAF announced the appointment on Sunday following a recruitment process conducted by the continental football governing body.

Adamu had been serving as acting General Secretary since March, following the resignation of Veron Mosengo-Omba, who subsequently became president of the football federation in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Eight Years of Experience at CAF

CAF President Patrice Motsepe said the appointment followed a competitive recruitment exercise during which the position was widely advertised and several candidates were interviewed.

He described Adamu as an experienced football administrator who joined CAF in 2018 as Director of Competitions before becoming Director of Tournaments and Events.

According to Motsepe, Adamu played a leading role in organising several major continental competitions, including the Africa Cup of Nations.

“Adamu brings extensive experience in African football administration, having joined CAF in 2018 as Director of Competitions before subsequently serving as Director of Tournaments and Events.

“He has played a leading role in the delivery of several major continental competitions, including CAF’s flagship tournament, the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations,” Motsepe said.

Adamu is also a graduate of the FIFA Master programme in International Management, Law and Humanities of Sport.

Son of Former FIFA Executive

As General Secretary, Adamu is expected to oversee CAF’s day-to-day administration and support the implementation of the organisation’s strategic priorities.

He is the son of Amos Adamu, a former Director of Sports in the then Ministry of Sports and former member of the FIFA Executive Committee.

His appointment places him among a line of CAF General Secretaries that includes members of Egypt’s Fahmy family.

Mourad Fahmy held the position from 1961 to 1982, followed by his son, Mustapha Fahmy, who served from 1982 to 2010. Amr Fahmy, Mourad’s grandson, occupied the office from 2017 to 2019.
