The Kebbi State Government has announced plans to sponsor a mass wedding for 300 couples as part of efforts to support families and ease the financial burden of marriage.
Under the mass wedding initiative, the government will provide ₦250,000 as dowry support for each groom. While also covering other essential marriage expenses, including wedding items and logistics required for the ceremonies.
State officials stated that the programme is designed to encourage lawful marriages, strengthen family values, and provide relief to residents who may be unable to afford the costs of getting married.
According to the government, beneficiaries will be selected based on set eligibility criteria, and preparations are underway to ensure the weddings are conducted in line with Islamic and cultural traditions.
Notably, Mass weddings have become a recurring social welfare initiative in several northern Nigerian states, where governments and charitable organizations sponsor couples who may otherwise struggle to afford marriage expenses.
While supporters argue that such programmes remove financial barriers to marriage and promote social stability. Critics have questioned the long-term sustainability of the initiatives and whether public funds could be better directed toward other pressing needs.
