The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has uncovered an alleged large-scale counterfeit alcoholic beverage operation at the Lagos International Trade Fair Complex, seizing products valued at more than ₦2 billion.
The agency’s Investigation and Enforcement Directorate carried out the raid following credible intelligence about illegal activities within makeshift stores used as parking facilities at the complex.
During the operation, NAFDAC operatives discovered more than 20 illegal stores allegedly involved in the production, revalidation and distribution of counterfeit alcoholic beverages.
According to the agency, officers found suspects blending counterfeit versions of popular alcoholic beverage brands, revalidating expired and unsafe drinks for resale, and stockpiling banned imported products.
The operation led to the arrest of two suspects, while operatives seized and evacuated products estimated to be worth over ₦2 billion.
The discovery raises concerns about the circulation of counterfeit and potentially unsafe alcoholic beverages, which could expose consumers to health risks.
NAFDAC urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious manufacturing, product revalidation or sales activities to the agency.
However, the agency thus provided its official complaints line, 0800-1-NAFDAC (0800-1-623322), for members of the public to report suspected violations while reiterating the importance of public cooperation in identifying and reporting illegal activities involving regulated products.
