The Oyo State Government has declared Monday, October 5, 2026, a work-free day for all teachers across the state to commemorate World Teachers’ Day and Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) Day.
The directive was contained in a circular issued on Sunday by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Musibau Babatunde, directing teachers in public schools across the state to stay away from work on Monday.
The government said the decision would enable teachers to participate fully in activities organised to mark the annual celebration and provide an opportunity for them to interact with colleagues and reflect on developments in the education sector.
Notably, the declaration also recognises the contributions of teachers to the development of education and human capital in the state.
However, the state government thus, described teachers as the foundation of human capital development, noting their role in shaping students’ academic, social and personal development.
The administration of Governor Seyi Makinde also reaffirmed its commitment to supporting teachers and improving the education sector, while acknowledging the importance of their contributions to the state’s growth.
World Teachers’ Day is observed annually on October 5 to recognise the contributions of teachers and highlight issues affecting the teaching profession and education systems globally.
In Nigeria, the occasion is also marked by the Nigeria Union of Teachers through activities aimed at celebrating teachers and drawing attention to their welfare, working conditions and professional development.
The work-free day will allow teachers in Oyo State to participate in the celebrations and other activities organised to mark the occasion.
