Edo Police busts Staged Kidnapping Plot, finds woman at a Hotel in Delta State

The Edo State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of four suspects who conspired to fraudulently obtain ₦50 million naira as ransom from family members through a fabricated abduction plot.

According to reports, the Police command received a complaint of the abduction of one Mrs. Oluchi Ugbowan, aged 45 years on her way to shop on the 1st of June 2026. After which a call was put through to her family members through a concealed telephone number demanding a ransom of ₦50 million naira for her release.

However, the operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping commenced a discreet investigation. While acting on both intelligence and technical resources to unravel the circumstances surrounding the alleged kidnap.

Preliminary investigation and the arrest of the suspects

The Edo police command report that, preliminary investigation leads to the arrest of one Israel Ability,  (28) at Benin City. Stating that the victim’s mobile phone was recovered from him during his arrest which prompted further investigations.

During investigations, Israel admits to the crime explaining how he was contacted by Mrs Oluchi to stage an abduction and demands ransom from her family.

Further investigation by operatives on 5 June 2026 led to a hotel in Ukwuani Local Government Area of Delta State, where Mrs. Oluchi Ugbowan was arrested. During interrogation, she reportedly confessed to staging her own abduction.

And subsequently guided investigators to the residence of an alleged accomplice, identified as Ochukwudem Uwadia, 38.

Investigators report that the residence was used as the location where videos showing the victim with tied hands and feet were recorded, circulated to her family as proof of captivity.

The suspect further disclosed that Uwadia’s 18-year-old son, Chibuzor Ochukwudem, appeared in the videos, allegedly pointing a firearm at her head to make the fake kidnapping appear real.

Notably, the Edo State Police Command had reiterated that all individuals linked to the alleged conspiracy have been arrested.

Further adding that a search of the premises also led to the recovery of an automatic pump-action gun reportedly used in the ransom videos.

Commissioner of Police commends Edo command operatives

The Commissioner of Police, Edo State Command, CP Monday Agbonika, in turn commended the operatives for their thorough investigation. Along with professionalism in uncovering the elaborate deception within a short time. He noted that the Command should treat all reports of kidnapping with utmost seriousness. And ensure commitment to  significant resources in ensuring victims rescue and perpetrators apprehended.

He further cautioned members of the public against engaging in fake kidnapping schemes. While warning that such acts constitute serious criminal offences which divert critical security attention away from genuine cases.

While urging residents to promptly report suspicious activities to law enforcement agencies. And also avoid actions that could instigate fear or panic within the public.
