Controversial Nigerian street-pop singer, Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, has stirred debate with a bold claim that no Nigerian artiste can win a Grammy Award without collaborating with him.
The singer made the remark during an appearance on Rubbin’ Minds, a programme on Channels Television, where he spoke about his career, confidence in his talent, and his place in Nigeria’s music industry. He declared that any Nigerian artiste aspiring to win a Grammy should feature him on a song, insisting that his presence is a key ingredient for such success.
He said:
“If any artiste wants to collect Grammy in this Nigeria, if you don’t feature me, you’d not collect Grammy. If you want to collect a Grammy nomination, come and feature me. I am the new-born Fela.”
Portable further described himself as the “new face” of Nigerian music and argued that his unique style and influence make him an important figure in the industry. He maintained that he has brought a different sound to the Nigerian music scene and believes his influence continues to grow despite the controversies surrounding him.
Portable also likened himself to Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, saying he sees himself as carrying on the tradition of fearless self-expression through music. Over the years, the singer has become known not only for his hit songs but also for his outspoken personality and frequent headline-making comments.
Portable also reflected on his involvement in celebrity boxing, saying he deliberately put part of his music career on hold to help grow the sport in Nigeria.
According to the singer, his participation in high profile boxing matches has brought attention and financial opportunities to the industry. While arguing that few Nigerian boxers have earned as much as he has through the sport.
He stressed:
“I am going for tour. Now, I have tried for Nigeria. I use my music career to build Nigeria boxing. In 2026, which boxer can come out to say they collected money more than me in this Nigeria? Who has collected more than ₦100 million? Who has grace like me? I’m a superstar,”
Notably, Portable set to reignite his feud with actor Charles Okocha in a celebrity boxing rematch titled “Unfinished Business.” The highly anticipated bout will take place at the Balmoral Convention Centre in Victoria Island, Lagos, where both entertainers will once again face off in the ring following their previous encounter.
