Nigerian students have brought pride to the country after winning the gold medal at the Spelling Bee World Cup held in China, emerging as the overall champions in the international competition.
The Nigeria Spelling Bee announced the victory via its Facebook page on Sunday, July 19, 2026 with captions which read thus;
“Team Nigeria got the Gold Award for the Middle School Group Category”
However, the Nigerian contingent comprises Oluwadamilola Adeolu of St. Lawrence Metropolitan College, Ado-Ekiti; Chinedu Okediachi of Madonna International Schools, Asaba; Maryam Yusuf and Abdurrahman Yusuf of Ar-Raheem International College, Ilorin of Ar-Raheem International College, Ilorin both who bagged Gold medal in the just concluded prestigious competition.
Remarkably, the team outperformed contestants from several countries, demonstrating exceptional spelling skills, vocabulary, and academic excellence throughout the event. The victory marks another significant milestone for Nigeria on the global academic stage and highlights the growing potential of young Nigerians in international educational competitions.
Earlier reports stated that the international competition, scheduled to hold from July 10 to 20, will bring together some of the world’s brightest young spellers. Noting that the students’ journey began at the national competition before advancing to the African Spelling Bee Championship in Harare, Zimbabwe, and now to the global stage.
The competition was led by 2026 African Spelling Bee Junior champion Oluwadamilola Adeolu, and the other three secured their place after outstanding performances at both the Nigeria Spelling Bee and the African Spelling Bee Championship.
Education stakeholders and well-wishers have congratulated the students for their outstanding achievement, describing the feat as a testament to the country’s talent and the dedication of the students, their teachers, and parents.
