Celebrity Nigerian Shoemaker, Nelson has drawn backlash on social media following allegations that he sold 100 units of a shoe expected to be one-of-one.
Nelson announced in a Tiktok video that he made the shoe to be the only one in existence due to its specialty and difficulty to replicate. As a result, he sold the shoe for N25 million.
However, social media users have alleged that the celebrity Shoemaker may have sold at least 100 pieces of the shoe.
One X user, @_jboflagos shared a screenshot alleging that the shoe is sold out already as only 100 units were created. He added that, “That guy cashed out with 2.5 billion naira in the bank while you were pontificating on X.”
Following this, X users have expressed mixed reactions with some admiring the move while others argue that the entire thing may be a marketing gimmick.
Tech guru, @hackSultan opined that;
“Don’t you think that if someone can lie about a shoe being one-of-one and end up producing 100 pieces, they can absolutely lie about selling out or the price too?”
Another X user, Sanchez added that;
“I think by large, this is him trying to create scarcity and feed into the luxury theme he markets the product as. There’s probably not been a sale of this magnitude or at all. Saying so piques interest and I think that’s the point”
Similarly, @toosolid said;
lmaooo exactly. How does something even go from being 1 of 1 to being 100 pieces? isn’t that false advertising?😭
Meanwhile, some people argued that the shoe’s pricing raises significant concern about Nigeria’s classism issue. They contended that Nigerians would pay any amount to buy items that make them feel superior to their fellows.
