Igbo traders in some markets within the Lagos Trade Fair Complex along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway have protested the activities of Chinese nationals accused of selling imported goods directly to consumers at lower prices.
The traders, who staged a demonstration at the market on 14th and 15th of September, 2026, displayed placards calling on Chinese businesses to leave the market, alleging that their direct-to-consumer sales were threatening the livelihood of local retailers.
The protesters claimed that Chinese traders were bypassing the traditional retail structure by offering imported products to consumers at prices considerably below those charged by local traders.
According to the demonstrators, the price disparity has resulted in a loss of customers and reduced profits for Nigerian retailers who depend on the sale of imported goods for their livelihoods.
Some of the placards displayed during the protest reportedly demanded the withdrawal of Chinese businesses from the market, reflecting growing frustration among the local traders over what they described as unfair competition.
However, the development highlights broader concerns surrounding the involvement of foreign nationals in Nigeria’s retail and trading sectors, particularly where foreign sellers operate closer to the consumer end of the supply chain.
Local traders have argued that their businesses face increasing pressure when foreign merchants are able to sell products at lower prices, making it difficult for them to compete while covering transportation, rent, labour and other operational costs.
The dispute also draws attention to the significant price differences that can exist between imported goods sold by Chinese suppliers and the same products retailed by Nigerian traders after additional markups. While lower prices may benefit consumers, local retailers say unchecked direct sales could undermine established trading networks and threaten their businesses.
