“I was made to transfer 200k at gunpoint” – internet user shares alleged police extortion incident

An internet user, identified as @feyikareem, has triggered widespread reactions after sharing a disturbing encounter involving alleged extortion by officers of the Nigerian Police.

Per his post, the incident occurred in Lagos while he was trying to pick up a colleague on their way to work.

He stated that the officers blocked his vehicle, forcefully dragged his colleague out, and then entered his car at gunpoint. He was reportedly directed to drive towards Cele Expressway, where the officers forced him under duress to transfer the sum of ₦200,000 into a First Bank account.

“On getting to Cele express, they cleared before the bridge and forced me to transfer the sum of 200k into a named first Bank account and this transfer was made at gunpoint at exactly 6:29AM. Immediately they confirmed the alert, they all jumped down from my vehicle and fled into their korope and zoomed off towards Mile 2.” He wrote.

Following the incident, Feyi revealed that he reported the case to the police and even provided a photo of one of the officers involved. However, he noted that there has been no meaningful progress in the investigation.

The post has since sparked outrage online, with many Nigerians sharing similar experiences and expressing frustration over rising cases of police brutality and extortion.

“I know that idiot. He and his criminal squad have blocked me twice. First around yabatech, second was at onipan. We drag wetin no nice. They are criminals.” One user commented.

“The whole police brutality is getting worse by the day…. those meant to uphold the law, have taken it into their own hands, using their weapons to oppress and intimidate the very people they’re sworn to protect…” A user opined.

“Bro if you see the beating wey I collect few days ago cus I no one gree follow them go their station.. e just pain me say na night, people no too observe wetin dey on.. we still reach station see another set of beating.. last last na 5k them still collect” Another user recounted a similar experience.

However, the incident has since added to growing concerns among Nigerians with various atrocities committed by Nigerian police officers including unchecked misconduct, abuse of power. While calling for an urgent need for police reform.
