Ghana announces schedule to evacuate citizens from South Africa amid continued Xenophobic threats

Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced a schedule to evacuate its citizens from South Africa following recent Xenophobic attacks.

The Ministry announced yesterday that its special chartered flight will depart South Africa’s O.R Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg on May 21 at 5am.

According to the ministry, the trip is free for Ghanaians in South Africa as it is fully paid for by the Ghanaian government. Meanwhile, Ghanaians are expected to contact their High Commission in Pretoria for more information.

Ghana’s move follows increased Xenophobic attacks against black Africans in South Africa. The incidents which started as mere protests quickly spiraled into attacks with so many African businesses forced to shut down.

Consequently, Ghana’s move has drawn notable praise from citizens of several other countries including Nigerians.

Recently, Nigeria’s Minister for Foreign Affairs Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu revealed that they had engaged South African authorities on the matter. She added that Nigerian business owners in South Africa have also been advised to shutter operations till further notice.
