A 25-year-old convict in Adamawa State, Suleiman Idi, has lamented that his two girlfriends abandoned him after he stole ₦700,000 to buy mobile phones for them.
Idi, a native of Ngurore in Yola South Local Government Area, made the disclosure while appearing before the Adamawa State Jail Delivery Committee, which reviewed his prison sentence.
The Ngurore Area Court sentenced him to six years’ imprisonment for the theft, and authorities transferred him to the Yolde Pate Correctional Centre on June 22, 2026.
However, the committee reduced his sentence from six years to two years on Friday, October 23, 2026.
During his appearance before the committee, chaired by the state Chief Judge, Justice Hafsat Abdulrahaman, Idi admitted that he stole the money and used it to purchase two mobile phones for his girlfriends, identified as Aisha and Asabe.
Both women reportedly live in Ngurore, the same community as the convict.
Idi expressed disappointment over their alleged abandonment, saying neither woman had visited him in prison or shown concern for his welfare since his incarceration.
His account revealed the personal consequences of his decision to steal to please his partners, only to find himself without their support after losing his freedom.
The sentence review, however offers him an opportunity to serve a reduced term, although his account of the relationships that influenced his actions highlights the risks of resorting to crime to meet personal expectations.
