Court Convicts former Minister of Power for N33.8 billion fraud, sets May 13 for sentencing

A Nigerian Federal High Court in Abuja has convicted former Minister of Power, Saleh Mamman for a N33.8 billion fraud.

According to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court convicted Mamman on a 12-count charge bordering on money laundering. The value of money involved totals about N33.8 billion.

Meanwhile, the judge has deferred his sentence to May 13, 2026 following Mamman’s absence in court.

To forestall his escape from Nigeria, EFCC Counsel has applied for a bench warrant to arrest him. This is expected to ensure his presence in court for the sentencing.

Mamman served as the Minister of Power from Aug. 21, 2019 till Sept. 1, 2021 under former President Muhammadu Buhari. Before his ministerial role, he was a politician and businessman who previously worked in the civil service.
