The Ebonyi State Government has arrested more than 30 suspected commercial sex workers and sealed a guest house in Abakaliki over alleged security concerns, suspected illicit drugs and violations of building regulations.
The operation was conducted on Tuesday by the Commissioner for Capital City and Urban Planning, Richard Ugo Idike, and the Commissioner for Internal Security, Prince Etta Uka Ude, alongside security operatives and members of the ministry’s task force.
During an inspection of the premises, officials reportedly recovered substances suspected to be illicit drugs, including materials identified as “Colos” and Indian hemp.

Idike said the presence of occupants reportedly drawn from different states at a facility operating without the necessary approval raised concerns about public safety and security.
Government Orders Indefinite Closure
The commissioner reiterated that property owners and developers must obtain the necessary approvals before constructing buildings or commencing operations.
He warned that the government would not tolerate the use of unapproved buildings for activities considered threats to public safety.
Idike subsequently ordered the guest house sealed indefinitely pending further clarification and compliance with the ministry’s requirements. He also directed the property owner to report to the ministry to explain the circumstances surrounding the facility’s operations.
Ude, the Commissioner for Internal Security, said the state government would not allow business premises to become safe havens for criminal activities.
He urged security agencies to strengthen surveillance of commercial establishments across Abakaliki and called for cooperation among government agencies, law enforcement personnel and residents to address security concerns.
As of the time of reporting, the arrested individuals had reportedly been taken into police custody for investigation, while efforts to locate the guest house owner were ongoing.
