The Edo State Government has established a special court to handle cultism and kidnapping cases in a bid to strengthen the administration of criminal justice and tackle rising security concerns in the state.
Punch reported that the initiative was made known in a statement issued by the Chief Registrar of the Edo State High Court, B.O. Osawaru, signed on June 25, 2026.
The development which is titled, โEstablishment and Composition of a Special Criminal Court for Edo State Sitting in Benin City,โ set to commence sitting in Benin City on July 1 regarded as Special Criminal Court 1.
However, the special court was established to focus on the fast trial and determination of cases relating to cultism and kidnapping, offences which have continued to pose significant security challenges across the state.
Also, the initiative forms part of ongoing efforts by the Edo State judiciary and government to ensure swift justice delivery, reduce case backlogs, and strengthen the fight against violent crimes.
Authorities expressed optimism that the establishment of the court would enhance the prosecution of offenders, serve as a deterrent to criminal activities, and contribute to improved security and public confidence in the justice system.
