President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced that the Federal Government has fulfilled its cash reward promise to the D’Tigress players and officials following their victory at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Championship.
Tinubu said each D’Tigress player has received the naira equivalent of $100,000, while each official received the equivalent of $50,000.
The President disclosed this in a statement issued via his X handle, noting that the cash payments completed the reward package earlier promised to the team, which also includes national honours and three-bedroom houses in Abuja.
According to Tinubu, the Federal Government became the first administration to fulfil presidential sporting rewards of such scale within one year. He explained that the delay in disbursing the rewards resulted from the need to follow due legal and administrative processes.
“Today, the rewards I promised our D’Tigress have been fully redeemed,” Tinubu said.
The President also revealed that the government is concluding outstanding cash rewards for the Super Falcons, adding that the players and officials had already received title documents for their allocated houses and National Honours certificates.
He further stated that the promised houses and national honours for the Super Eagles players had also been redeemed.
Tinubu said Nigerian athletes who bring honour to the country deserve more than public praise, stressing that the government must demonstrate its appreciation by fulfilling its commitments.
“Our athletes who bring honour to Nigeria deserve more than applause. They deserve a country that keeps its word,” he said.
The D’Tigress secured their fifth consecutive AfroBasket title with a victory over Mali in the final, extending their dominance in African women’s basketball.
