A Nigerian Lady has sparked widespread discussion on social media after recounting her experience at a foreign exchange (Forex) trading event, alleging that brokers in attendance encouraged attendees to project an image of success rather than focus on becoming consistently profitable traders.
According to her account, speakers at the event reportedly advised aspiring traders to showcase luxury lifestyles, post screenshots of impressive trading profits, and build a strong social media following, even if their actual trading performance did not reflect the image being presented. She claimed the emphasis was placed on becoming an influencer capable of attracting students and clients rather than earning sustainable income through trading itself.
“I went for a forex event and tell me why for every brokage firms I meet and I was asking questions, they told me that I should not focus on been profitable instead I should become a forex influencer and I would post my lifestyle and claimed I made it from forex.” She said.
The remarks have reignited debate about the practices of some players in Nigeria’s rapidly growing Forex industry. Forex trading has gained significant popularity in the country, driven by currency volatility, high unemployment, and the search for alternative sources of income.
However, the industry has also faced criticism over the years for the high rate of retail trader losses and the aggressive marketing of trading courses, mentorship programmes, and signal services that critics say often create unrealistic expectations.
Social media users reacted with mixed opinions to the woman’s claims. Some traders acknowledged that content creation, mentorship programmes, affiliate marketing, and course sales have become more profitable for many individuals than trading the financial markets themselves. Others argued that though such practices exist, they do not represent the entire Forex community.
Rather insists that disciplined trading, proper education, sound risk management, and realistic expectations remain the foundation of long term success.
