Jorge Messi, father and longtime representative of Argentine football star Lionel Messi, has died at the age of 68, according to multiple Argentine media reports.
Jorge had reportedly been battling health complications for some time, with his condition becoming a subject of public attention in recent months after his son made an emotional appearance for Argentina.
In June, Lionel Messi became visibly emotional after scoring for Argentina against Algeria at the World Cup. Asked about his reaction after the match, the Inter Miami forward said his tears had nothing to do with football.

“Why was I crying? It had absolutely nothing to do with football. I have had a few difficult days,” Messi said at the time.
His comments subsequently triggered speculation about his father’s health, prompting the Messi family to issue a statement confirming that Jorge was experiencing health problems.
“The Messi family wishes to inform you that Jorge Messi is currently dealing with health problems. He is currently under medical supervision and is recovering well,” the family said.
Family urges respect for privacy
The family also criticised what it described as insensitive reports and speculation surrounding Jorge’s condition, urging the public and media to respect his privacy.
“We sincerely appreciate the expressions of affection, respect and concern we have received and ask that the privacy, confidentiality and personal space of Jorge, and that of his entire family, be respected throughout this process,” the statement added.
Lionel Messi’s concern for his father was also evident in late July when he missed the Major League Soccer All-Star Game, with reports suggesting that he travelled to be with Jorge. He subsequently returned to action for Inter Miami.
Jorge Messi played a significant role in his son’s football career and was closely involved in the management of Lionel’s professional affairs.
His death comes as a major personal loss for the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner, who has often spoken about the influence of his family throughout his remarkable football journey.
