Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has announced a ₦2 billion grant to the Abia State Government to support the revival and expansion of the historic Akwete weaving industry.
She made the announcement during a visit to the Akwete Weaving Cooperative Society in Ukwa East Local Government Area of Abia State, where she commended local artisans for preserving one of Nigeria’s oldest indigenous textile traditions.
“And for all the notable sons of Igbo land is not only Abia State rise up to the occasion to preserve this (Akwete). On my own, I told the Governor, I’m donating two billion naira (₦2billion) to the project. First Lady said.
According to the First Lady, the funds will be used to develop the Akwete production site, improve infrastructure, expand production capacity, and encourage younger generations to embrace the centuries old handwoven craft.
Oluremi Tinubu further urged Nigerians to promote Akwete fabric both locally and internationally, describing it as a unique cultural heritage that deserves global recognition. Echoing her support, she pledged to wear an outfit made from Akwete fabric at the 2027 presidential inauguration if President Bola Tinubu is re-elected.
The visit was hosted by Abia State Governor Alex Otti and the state’s First Lady, Priscilla Otti. During the event, traditional rulers conferred on The First Lady with chieftaincy title “Ugo Nwanyi Abia”, meaning “Pride of Abia Women,” in recognition of her contributions to preserving and promoting the state’s cultural heritage.
