A police inspector is receiving treatment for severe facial injuries after he was allegedly shot at close range by a fellow officer (Constable) following a heated altercation at the Iju Police Division in Lagos State.
The incident reportedly occurred at about 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, shortly after Inspector Aminu Nuhu completed his night station guard duty and was handing over to Police Constable Lateef Afeez, who had resumed for the morning shift.
According to an internal police signal, an argument between the two officers escalated when the inspector allegedly threw stones at the constable.
Police authorities said the confrontation took a violent turn when the constable allegedly fired a riot gun issued to him for guard duty, hitting the inspector in the face at close range.
“The Constable retaliated by firing the riot gun he had booked for duty directly at the Inspector’s face at close range,” the internal police signal stated.
The blast left Inspector Nuhu with serious injuries to his mouth and right cheek. He was initially rushed to General Hospital, Ifako, before being referred to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja, due to the severity of his injuries.
The police said Constable Afeez was immediately arrested, disarmed and placed in detention following the incident.
“The Constable has been arrested, disarmed and is currently in proper detention,” the signal added.
Authorities disclosed that after preliminary investigations, the case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, Yaba, for a comprehensive investigation.
Police said further updates would be provided as investigations into the shooting continue.
