Senator Adeola Yayi has faced criticism over the distribution of campaign branded 4kg bags of garri at his campaign office in Ogun State.
The backlash followed the circulation of videos and images showing what appeared to be a campaign office in Ogun State, where Senator Yayi was surrounded by branded garri sacks.
The footage sparked criticism online, with users questioning why Nigerian politicians continue to offer food items to citizens instead of supporting initiatives that could provide sustainable livelihoods and address broader challenges.
An X user, MonITNG, described the gesture as an outdated form of “stomach infrastructure,” stressing that distributing campaign-branded garri does not address issues such as unemployment and poor public services.
The user called for approaches that would provide lasting solutions for citizens rather than relying on temporary food assistance.
The development has also prompted questions over the continued reliance on food distributions by Nigerian politicians, particularly around election periods.
The criticism centres on whether such temporary assistance can provide meaningful solutions to the economic challenges facing citizens.
Netizens instead called for sustainable livelihood initiatives capable of improving the economic conditions of Nigerians.
The distribution of the 4kg garri bags has consequently drawn attention to the broader debate over political gestures involving food items and demands for longer-term development initiatives.
