Two Police Tactical Teams Clash in Osun Community, Residents Panic Over Gunshots

Residents of Ajegunle area of Ifon, Osun State, were thrown into panic on Tuesday night after a gunshot was heard in the community and two tactical teams of the Nigeria Police Force reportedly engaged in a confrontation.

The incident occurred on September 8, 2026, at about 9:45pm, following a distress call reportedly made by the Olufon Palace to the Ifon Police Division after a gunshot was heard around Ajegunle.

According to a police situation report obtained by SaharaReporters, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) immediately mobilised officers to the area to ascertain what had happened.

Two Police Teams Found Fighting

However, upon arrival, the DPO and his team reportedly encountered two separate tactical police teams involved in a heated confrontation.

One of the teams was identified as the Anti-Robbery Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Osogbo, led by DSP Kolawole Wasiu alongside four other officers.

The second team was reportedly a tactical unit from Zone XI, led by Inspector Ola Isaac and four other officers.

The police situation report stated that the two teams were seen “attacking themselves” and arguing, creating fear among residents who had already been alarmed by the sound of the gunshot.

Teams Had Not Reported Presence

The report further stated that neither of the two tactical teams had informed or reported their presence to the Ifon Police Division before the confrontation.

Concerned by the development, the DPO reportedly contacted the Osun State Commissioner of Police and briefed him on the situation.

The Commissioner subsequently ordered that the officers attached to both teams be disarmed and detained pending an investigation into what led to the confrontation.

The order was reportedly carried out immediately, with the officers taken into custody at the Ifon Police Division.

Senior Officers Ordered To Report

The senior police officers among those detained were also reportedly directed to report at the division by 6am on Wednesday, September 9.

The development has raised concerns over the level of coordination among different tactical units of the Nigeria Police Force, particularly when multiple teams operate within the same community without informing the local division.

Residents were reportedly left frightened by the combination of the initial gunshot and the subsequent confrontation involving armed police officers.

Police Yet To Explain Cause Of Clash

As of the time of the report, the exact reason the two tactical teams were in the area or what triggered the confrontation between them remained unclear.

SaharaReporters said attempts to contact the Osun State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi Zechariah, for comments were unsuccessful.

The police are expected to investigate the incident and determine why the two tactical teams were operating in the same community without reporting to the local division and how the confrontation escalated to the point where officers had to be disarmed and detained.
