South African musicians have begun losing continental performance gigs across Africa in the wake of continued Xenophobic attacks in the country.
South Africa’s Minister for Justice Mmamoloko Kubayi, revealed that the recent attack on foreigners in the country has begun affecting their musicians.
Kubayi disclosed in a video circulating online that several South African musicians have lost their previously booked performance gigs. She explained that the musicians lost their gigs across Africa and other regions.
“Majority of South African artists who perform in other African countries are seeing their gigs getting cancelled. One artist reached out to me and said all her gigs were cancelled.”
This followed recent attacks meted against foreigners by some groups in South Africa. The continued incidents which the government failed to curtail led to massive repatriation of several foreign nationals.
Particularly, countries like Nigeria, Ghana, and several others have begun repatriating their citizens from South Africa over the attacks.
In addition to this, several Africans have also taken to social media to protest the continued attacks. One of the protests included the recent support of Mexico over South Africa in a recent World Cup match.
Meanwhile, the Minister stressed that the gig cancellations come as part of a broader impact of the Xenophobic attacks. While she argued that the country is not Xenophobic, she confirmed that South African companies in other African countries are being affected.
