The Department of State Services (DSS) has recruited 27 qualified orphans from orphanage homes across Nigeria into its workforce.
The initiative was championed by the Director-General of the DSS, Oluwatosin Adeola Ajayi, aimed at creating opportunities for vulnerable young people and promoting inclusiveness in public service. The recruitment exercise which has drawn praise from orphanage administrators and child welfare organisations. Action described as a life changing opportunity for young Nigerians who grew up without parental care.
Notably, the majority of the beneficiaries were recruited from different professional backgrounds after meeting the agency’s requirements. Care home operators stressed that the programme gives disadvantaged youths a rare opportunity to build careers in national security while contributing to national development.
However, the Director of Holy Child Motherless Babies Home in Enugu, Rev. Sister Antonella Okeke, explained that the recruitment has given beneficiaries more than employment, providing them with a renewed sense of identity, purpose and belonging after growing up with limited opportunities.
Similarly, the Administrator of Margaret Garba Orphanage/Less Privilege Home in Kogi State, Rufina Edache Ejembi, described the initiative as a strong message that no Nigerian child should be left behind because of their family background or circumstances.
The orphanage administrators urged other government agencies and private organisations to emulate the DSS by creating employment opportunities for qualified young people raised in orphanages. While stating that the initiative reflects a commitment to recognising talent and potential regardless of social background.
