President Bola Tinubu has called on Nigerians, particularly public officials, to put national interest and the common good above personal interests and ambitions.
The President made the remarks spoke through the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, at a thanksgiving service in honour of former SGF, Dr Boss Mustapha, who marked his 70th birthday. The service took place at St. Monica Cathedral of the Lutheran Church of Christ in Nigeria, Jimeta, Yola.
Tinubu urged Nigerians to embrace a stronger culture of patriotism and selfless service. He stressed the importance of devotion to public service, urging those entrusted with leadership responsibilities to prioritise the welfare and development of the nation.
The President also used the occasion to celebrate Mustapha, describing his 70 years as a milestone worthy of thanksgiving and reflection. He noted that the gathering was primarily an opportunity to appreciate God for preserving Mustapha through the various stages of his life, while also recognising his contributions to Nigeria.
Mustapha served as SGF from 2017 to 2023 under former President Muhammadu Buhari. During his tenure, he coordinated government policies and initiatives and chaired the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, which led Nigeria’s response to the pandemic.
Tinubu had previously described Mustapha as an exceptional leader, patriot, bridge builder and dedicated public servant whose service was characterised by humility, integrity and institutional knowledge.
Also speaking at the event, Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang described Mustapha as a benchmark for integrity in public service and called for greater unity among political leaders in the Middle Belt.
Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, represented by his deputy, Professor Kaletapwa George Farauta, also commended Mustapha for his contributions to nation-building and his steadfastness in public governance.
The thanksgiving service brought together political leaders, government officials, family members, friends and other well-wishers to celebrate the former SGF’s milestone birthday.
Tinubu’s call comes amid continued emphasis by the Federal Government on patriotism, responsible leadership and commitment to national development, with the President urging Nigerians to place the collective interest ahead of individual advancement.
