The Ogun State Government has suspended the Eselu of Iselu Kingdom, Oba Akintunde Akinyemi, over alleged involvement in partisan political activities, directing him to vacate his palace and stop using royal insignia pending an investigation.
The suspension was approved by the State Executive Council under Section 52(1) of the Ogun State Obas and Chiefs Law, 2021, according to a statement issued on Tuesday by Kayode Akinmade, media aide to Governor Dapo Abiodun.
Akinmade said the decision was communicated to the monarch in a letter dated October 20, 2026, signed by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Ganiyu Hamzat.
Government Cites Complaints Against Monarch
According to Akinmade, the government’s decision followed several complaints about the traditional ruler’s conduct, particularly allegations of open involvement in partisan politics.
“The council acted following several complaints concerning the traditional ruler’s conduct, particularly his alleged involvement in overtly partisan political activities, some of which were reportedly publicised by him,” the statement read.

The government maintained that partisan political activities by traditional rulers were contrary to customary law and prohibited by statute.
It warned that such conduct could undermine the dignity of traditional institutions and threaten peaceful coexistence among residents with different political affiliations.
Monarch Ordered to Vacate Palace
As part of the suspension, the government directed Oba Akinyemi to leave the palace and refrain from presenting himself as the Eselu of Iselu Kingdom throughout the suspension period.
The letter also prohibited him from wearing or using royal insignia, including crowns, beads, beaded staffs, irukere and other traditional symbols of authority.
“Consequently, during the suspension period, you must vacate and stay away from the palace of Eselu,” the letter stated.
It further directed the monarch to refrain from claiming or accepting recognition in his royal capacity until the matter was resolved.
Monarch to Face Investigation
The suspended monarch was also instructed to appear at any meeting or hearing convened by the state government to investigate the allegations against him.
Akinmade said the suspension was intended to safeguard peace, order and good governance in Iselu Kingdom while the investigation proceeded.
Copies of the letter were sent to the Secretary of Yewa North Local Government and the Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, for necessary action.
