Nigerians drag Sheikh Gumi for calling bandits “part of us”

Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has drawn reactions online after publicly defending bandit kidnappings, describing them as a means of funding their survival.

Speaking during an interview, Gumi reflected on how bandits rely heavily on ransom payments, stating that they are “part of us” who depend on such funds for survival. He also reiterated his longstanding position of advocating dialogue over military force. Recalling his past efforts to engage bandits diplomatically to secure the release of kidnapped victims.

He said:

“The t£rrorists need all the money they’re getting from kidnapping. It’s not like they are living luxurious lives. The government is putting too much pressure on them so they need money to finance their war machines.”

His comments have since triggered widespread reactions online, with many Nigerians criticizing his remarks and questioning why he has faced no legal consequences.
The reactions come amid Nigeria’s ongoing struggle with bandit attacks, kidnappings, and growing insecurity across several parts of the country.

One user wrote:

“They need money to finance their war machines” against who, please?
They should arrest this man already please. Hearing his voice alone always provokes me.”

Another added:

“This is not a crime abi?
Yet Justice Crack is locked up for simply speaking up for our soldiers’ welfare.
The hypocrisy is deafening. “

Third user wrote:

“If Gumi was a southerner by now he would be imprisoned but his a Northerner so he has freedom of speech for his brothers in the bush. All hail one Nigeria.”
