Nollywood actor turned politician Desmond Elliot has sparked reactions online after claims that he transformed the Surulere during his tenure as a member of the Lagos State House of Assembly.
The backlash followed his remarks during an interview in a TV show, highlighting developmental projects and improvements allegedly facilitated by him in Surulere.
He said:
“If you look at Surulere ten years ago, it was a horrible place to live in. Today, electricity is one of the best you can find anywhere else. Also, is having an open door policy.”
Critics challenged the claims, arguing that many parts of the constituency still face infrastructural and social challenges. Several other users questioned the extent of the reported transformation, calling for measurable evidence of the projects cited if true.
A user commented:
“I stayed in Surulere up till 2016, I can tell you for free that Desmond Elliot is a liar, the consistuency he represents already had the roads tarred with up to 23 hours electricity supply.”
Another user added:
“All he needed to do was mention his constituency projects and the intervention projects worthy of mention than going on media to show how empty he was in government.
What was the cost of the 2×4 bridge he constructed?”
Desmond’s comments have since sparked wider conversations about political accountability and the criteria used to assess the performance of elected representatives. As reactions continue to trail the claims, critics further pinpointed pre-existing infrastructure before his emergence.
However, the criticisms underscores the growing role of social media in scrutinizing the records and achievements of public office holders.
